Recently, GSG Senior Vice President Keith Sommer joined 96.7 KISS FM’s iHeart radio “CEOs You Should Know” to discuss our staffing agency’s skilled trades staffing, second-chance hiring, and workforce advancement programs. GSG Is Changing Lives in the Community.
To highlight GSG’s work in the community, Sommer shared the story of a man who was looking for work after being incarcerated.
The man told GSG that he had been applying for jobs, but no one would hire him. With GSG’s help, the man enrolled in the Goodwill Career & Technical Academy (GCTA), which offers certification classes at little to no cost. From here, the man earned his commercial driver’s license (CDL) certification.
Next, GSG helped the man land a job driving a truck for a local company. The man held a temporary job with GSG for 90 days with the company where he was placed. Within six months, the man was given a permanent job with this company and promoted several times.
“He circled back with us at one point and thanked us, and he said, ‘You have no idea what getting my CDL certification did for my life … You placed me with an amazing company. I bought my first car, I now have a family, and I just bought a house,” Sommer said.
Sommer noted he gets “chills” telling this story and similar ones. “Those are the life-changing stories that we hear,” he said. “I know that they don’t happen to everyone. But that’s my dream and vision is that it can happen to everyone. And that’s why I do what I do every day, and I wake up and I show up.”

With GSG, job seekers aren’t “walking alone,” Sommer indicated. The staffing agency offers free counseling to its internal staff and temp employees. It also provides financial support and works closely with job seekers to put them on a path to career success.
“If you’re willing to put in the time, energy, and effort, we’re willing to put in the time, energy, and effort with you,” Sommer stated. “You’ve got a team of people whose mission is to transform your life through education at work. That’s what we’re here to do.”

Outstanding customer service will take care of itself; partnerships will take care of themselves. All of that will take care of itself when you take care of your team.”

Sommer pointed out that GSG CEO Rob Neville maintains a powerful vision. In the future, GSG will continue to foster workforce advancement. Meanwhile, it will help community members come together and accomplish shared goals.
“We want to be that connector bringing people together, bringing nonprofits together, bringing this community together to really make a difference in people’s lives,” Sommer said.
